My emotional rescue (by {E}mma)
A relatively recent convert to trawling the web for anything Benedict Cumberbatch, you cannot begin to imagine the joy I experienced upon learning that he had portrayed Vincent Van Gogh in a BBC telemovie about the Dutch post-Impressionist painter.
For many reasons, the life and work of this artist has held considerable interest for me and I count my lucky, swirly stars to have seen a few of Van Gogh’s works when they were in Australia in 2010, amongst them Starry Night Over The Rhone, which has since become my most beloved piece of art in the world (a print of which adorns the wall of my bedroom, situated above my writing desk to gaze adoringly up to for inspiration).
Benedict Cumberbatch inspires things too. While they might not be exactly the same things as Starry Night Over The Rhone, there are some parallels that I will not go into detail of here ;)
Rather, I want to recommend viewing of the Beeb’s Van Gogh: Painted With Words, not least for Benedict’s turn as the troubled artist but more so for the fascinating, oft-moving account of Van Gogh’s life and bold, unrelenting pursuit of his craft in the face of escalating struggles with his bipolar disorder which would lead to his ending his own life, aged 37.

“You can leave your hat, Mr Thornton” she murmured softly, hopeful not to attract the attention of passers-by even as she reached for the silken tie at his collar “but I’ll be buggered if that cravat is going to stay where it is, sunshine, in fact..” she trailed off, drawing closer to him, nodding in the direction of the high street, all but whispering “come up to my room at the hotel. I don’t have pay-per-view or a mini-bar but I could show you a few alternative uses for” she tugged playfully at his tie “that bloody thing.”
Thornton gently raised his eyebrows, dubiously observing his counterpart, in no doubt of her questionable morality or that she was a few looms short of mill but, intrigued by the promise of an afternoon free of accounts, suppliers and frustrating considerations of that unfathomable Hale woman, he followed the stranger’s lead toward the high street….

On Space, Love, and Carl Sagan’s Cosmic Mix Tape
Penny Lane was fascinated by the journey of the Voyager probes, as they carried inside of them gold records full of binary-coded human culture to the farthest reaches of our solar system, and beyond. It occurred to her that those gold records represented a love story - not of mankind, but of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan, who met and fell in love while assembling these time capsules of our species.
Penny made this short film as a love note to her husband on their wedding day, using the journey of these spacecraft and the love story of Carl and Ann as a way to express her joy and wonder on that day:
“Thousands of millions of years from now, long after our Sun burns the Earth into nothing, the Voyagers will still be out there, rushing at incredible speeds, into an incredible unknown, seeking. The Voyagers were only built to last two years, but they surprised everyone.
They are fearless.”

This is so moving, on so many levels, I wept through a great deal of it. Surely I cannot be the only one?…

Amazing Archive of High-Res Photos from NASA’s Gemini Missions
There’s something about old photographs. The perfect combination of faded light, outdated coloring, and nostalgia seems to make them more beautiful with age.
Perhaps that’s why this collection of images from NASA’s Gemini Program is so great. The Project Gemini Online Digital Archive, released this weekend by NASA and Arizona State University, features high-resolution digital scans from the original Gemini flight films.
As NASA’s second human spaceflight program, which had 10 manned flights between 1965 and 1966, Gemini saw such milestones as the first American spacewalk, first week-long spaceflight, and the first docking maneuver with another vehicle in space. The success of these objectives paved the way for the Apollo program, which immediately followed Gemini and landed the first men on the moon.
Follow the source for more gorgeous imagery highlighting the Gemini missions and the serene perspectives caught through it.
